National Weather Forecast: Hot For South-east Inland

BOM
G'day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Thursday, the 29th of January.

And we're continuing to see that record heat continuing through inland parts of New South Wales, south-west Queensland and also eastern and northern South Australia, with temperatures once again getting up into the high forties.

Much cooler though in parts of Tasmania, southern Victoria and southern South Australia, with south to south-easterly winds keeping conditions cool there. Also cooler across much of the New South Wales and Queensland coast, and we're also seeing widespread rain and thunderstorms across our tropical north, as that's bringing some heavy falls and severe thunderstorms up there.

But let's have a look at all of that in more detail.

Firstly, in Queensland, where we're seeing much cooler conditions for our coastal parts of south-eastern Queensland, a little bit warmer as we get further north.

And then that rain and storm area is right across northern Queensland, and that heat continuing through inland Queensland as well, temperatures getting there into the mid to high forties.

South-eastern Queensland though, a little bit cooler, partly cloudy conditions and 30 °C in Brisbane.

Moving down into New South Wales, and we're continuing to see that record heat through inland parts of New South Wales, with temperatures once again into the mid to high forties.

While coastal areas of New South Wales are looking at much cooler conditions, as sea breezes and onshore winds keep conditions cooler there with temperatures in the mid to high twenties, while mid to high forties through inland areas.

Sydney partly cloudy and 29 °C.

Canberra another hot one, 35 °C and sunny through there.

Now down into Victoria, a similar story where our coastal areas are much cooler through southern parts of Victoria, with temperatures in the low twenties to mid twenties further inland.

But northern parts of Victoria are going to see temperatures in the low to mid forties, which is the fifth or sixth day, depending on where you are, of 40 °C heat in northern Victoria, particularly along the Murray.

Staying dry though, breezy conditions for our coastal areas around the Prom, etc. Melbourne partly cloudy and warm, 26 °C.

Now looking down into Tasmania. Similar story down there with high pressure dominating the weather, with mild to warm conditions across much of the state.

Just a chance of a light shower through inland areas and cloudy conditions across northern and eastern areas, but otherwise remaining fairly dry for much of the state. A bit cooler though for some of our eastern coastal areas.

Hobart looking at 22 °C and partly cloudy.

Moving up into South Australia, and they're seeing that record heat as well across much of northern and eastern parts of the state, with temperatures getting up into the high forties.

You can see there 49 °C at Marree and Roxby Downs, with 48 °C and 47 °C quite common elsewhere.

Thankfully again, our coastal areas are a little bit cooler, but we're starting to see that heat return for our southern agricultural areas of South Australia as temperatures get back up into the mid thirties.

Adelaide looking at another hot one, 37 °C and partly cloudy skies.

Moving over into WA, and we're seeing the final remnants of that tropical low bringing the last bit of rainfall tomorrow morning through south-eastern parts. That will be all gone by Thursday afternoon.

Heat starting to return though to south-western parts of WA with temperatures in the low thirties there, but much cooler along our coastal areas, temperatures in the mid twenties.

And also a bit cooler up in the Pilbara, where we normally see that 40 °C heat, as that heat is now focused over South Australia. So we're only seeing low to mid thirties across the north, getting to 40 °C around Geraldton.

Perth looking at another warm and sunny day and 34 °C.

Moving up into the tropical north, widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across Cape York, the Gulf, the Top End as well, and thanks to a monsoon low that's bringing some heavy falls there.

Temperatures are also in the low thirties with widespread rain and thunderstorm activity.

We're getting pretty hot as you move into southern parts of the NT with temperatures in the low forties. Darwin looking at a wet and stormy 31 °C on Thursday.

So with the record heat in south-east inland Australia and the rain and storms across northern Australia, make sure you stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings via our website and app, and we'll see you again here again tomorrow.
