National Weather Forecast: Rain And Storms Across North

BOM
G'day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Friday, the 6th of March.

While last week it was all about the south, this week it is all about the north. We have multiple tropical lows impacting much of northern Australia. We will be watching closely at some tropical lows off the WA coast, a tropical low over the NT and another tropical low bringing widespread rain and thunderstorm activity to much of northern and eastern Queensland.

Further south, showers and storms will impact eastern parts of New South Wales, while high pressure just south of Perth will bring sunny and clear weather to Victoria, South Australia and much of WA. Temperatures will be heading up over in WA as that west coast trough deepens.

So let us look at all of this in more detail.

Firstly in Queensland, all eyes are on that tropical low off the coast of Cairns, likely to cross somewhere on the north tropical coast during the day on Friday and Friday night. That is going to bring widespread heavy rainfall for much of northern and eastern parts of Queensland.

Heavy falls could extend all the way down to the Central Coast and Whitsunday areas, also Herbert and Lower Burdekin, extending inland through northern parts of Queensland as well as the north tropical coast.

Track maps are being issued for this low and Severe Weather Warnings are also in place, with Flood Watches current for much of coastal Queensland from about the Saint Lawrence-Mackay area all the way up into northern Queensland.

Flood Watches also remain current for much of inland western Queensland.

Warm and humid conditions across much of eastern Queensland with temperatures around 30 °C. It will be hotter through inland parts of Queensland with temperatures in the mid to high 30s.

South-eastern parts of Queensland could see warm and showery conditions with showers on the increase there, easing in other parts, and 29 °C in Brisbane.

Moving down into New South Wales, we have an inland trough feature bringing showers and thunderstorms through eastern parts of the state, from the north-east and Central Coast down towards the south.

That activity will expand inland during the afternoon and evening hours, with severe thunderstorms possible around those central areas, particularly through inland districts and into parts of western New South Wales.

Far western New South Wales will stay dry after the heavy rainfall seen last week.

Temperatures are also heating up across much of the state, with high 20s to low 30s along the coast and mid to high 30s through inland areas.

Sydney can expect showers and possible storms in the western suburbs and on the hills with a top of 29 °C. Canberra will reach 30 °C with the chance of a shower or storm about the hills.

In Victoria, it will be a much calmer day. Just a few showers are possible through far eastern parts of the state, maybe a rumble of thunder, but generally fine and dry across most districts.

Cooler conditions in the south with temperatures in the low to mid 20s in south-easterly winds. Northern parts will be warmer with temperatures in the low 30s and plenty of sunshine.

Melbourne can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 24 °C.

In Tasmania, a weak front will move through on Thursday night and Friday morning, but it will be very weak.

Temperatures will increase again through Friday into the low to mid 20s for many areas, reaching around 25 °C through northern parts.

There may be the chance of a late shower through south-eastern Tasmania, but otherwise it will be dry and mild across most of the state.

Hobart can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 23 °C.

Across South Australia, high pressure is dominating the state, leading to a sunny day across all districts.

It will be a little cooler in the south with temperatures in the mid to high 20s and breezy south-easterly winds. Inland parts will heat up into the mid to high 30s as the air warms moving across the state.

Adelaide can expect plenty of sunshine with a top of 27 °C.

In Western Australia, it will be a very warm day, particularly away from coastal areas.

Coastal districts along the south coast will remain cooler with temperatures in the mid to high 20s, while inland areas and parts of the west coast will see temperatures in the mid to high 30s.

Showers and thunderstorms may develop along the trough line north of Perth, particularly north of around the Geraldton area.

Temperatures could reach around 40 °C through parts of the Pilbara with afternoon showers and storms.

Perth can expect a hot and sunny day with a top of 36 °C.

Across the Northern Territory, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected from Cape York across the Gulf, much of the Top End and into the Kimberley.

Temperatures will sit in the high 20s to low 30s under rain and cloud cover.

It will be a little warmer through the far south of the Territory with temperatures around 35 °C.

Cloud cover and showers and storms through central parts of the NT will keep conditions a little cooler there.

Heavy rainfall is possible through central and western parts of the Top End on Friday, including Darwin, where widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely Friday night and into the weekend.

Darwin is forecast to reach 29 °C with rain and thunderstorms.

With wet weather across much of northern Australia tomorrow and into the weekend, and fine conditions across southern parts, remember you can get the latest forecasts and warnings for your area via our website, app and social media.
