NATO Chief Visits NY for UNGA, Speaks at West Point

On Wednesday (24 September), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte travelled to New York as the United Nations hosted its 80th General Assembly, engaging with political leaders and senior officials.

During the two-day visit, Mr Rutte attended a Transatlantic Dinner hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya, the President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, and US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz.

The Secretary General wrapped up his visit to the US with an address to cadets at the United States Military Academy West Point on Thursday (25 September 2025). He emphasised the value of NATO and the transatlantic bond that underpins it, highlighting how the Alliance continues to adapt to face evolving security challenges. He commended the cadets for their service and encouraged them as they hone their skills as future leaders, saying "you are the bright promise of a new generation."
