New Aged Care Facility In Camperdown Opens Its Doors

VIC Premier

The brand-new Aged Care Facility in Camperdown has officially opened its doors - built by the Allan Labor Government following a $39.6 million investment to support older Victorians in the region.

Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt today officially opened and toured the 36-bed state-of-the-art public sector residential aged care facility, now operating at Camperdown Hospital.

The facility will be renamed Leura Aged Care, following significant engagement with the community over a 12-month period. The name Leura has a long and strong association and affiliation with the Camperdown District.

The name is derived from Mount Leura, a large prominent scoria cone volcano that dominates the Eastern entrance to the township and is clearly visible from the many balconies at the new aged care facility.

Designed with dementia-friendly principles and a strong focus on mental health support, Leura Aged Care prioritises natural light, open views, and access to green spaces - recognising the vital role the environment plays in promoting residents' physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

The facility features modern single rooms with private ensuites, thoughtfully arranged into small household-style settings. Each household includes a dedicated kitchen, dining area and lounge, creating a warm, homelike environment.

Shared spaces include a community room, reflection room, café, hair salon and other areas to encourage social interaction among residents, families, friends and the wider community.

The project was delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with South West Healthcare and builder A W Nicholson, supporting around 120 local construction jobs during construction and continuing to generate employment opportunities in the region.

The Labor Government is ensuring more Victorians across the state can access high-quality aged care, investing $34.6 million in the Victorian Budget 2025/26 to strengthen Public Sector Residential Aged Care Services - Australia's largest state-funded aged care network. With a further $7.5 million invested to continue upgrades to facilities across the sector.

This builds on the strong track record of investment including more than $700 million in public residential aged care - with $370 million dedicated to the Rural and Regional Public Sector Residential Aged Care Revitalisation Strategy to replace and refurbish facilities across Victoria.
