New Cohort of Officers Set to Serve and Protect

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has welcomed 26 new Protective Services Officers (PSOs), further bolstering the state's frontline safety and security capabilities.

The new Protective Services Group (PSG) cohort will perform a vital role in safeguarding state government buildings, assets and people while working closely with Queensland Police Officers to uphold community safety.

Assistant Commissioner Charysse Pond congratulated the graduating cohort and commended their dedication to serving Queensland communities.

"These new Protective Services Officers are a welcome addition to our team, and their presence will enhance our ability to ensure the safety and security of Queensland communities," Assistant Commissioner Pond said.

Protective Services Officer (PSO) Caycie Van Der Syde said her training at the Oxley Academy included a variety of both theoretical and practical components.

"I'm looking forward to putting everything I've learnt into practice and gaining more experience while working within the community," PSO Van Der Syde said.

PSO Ken Cavanagh is looking forward to continuing a career of service to the community, joining PSG after serving as an Australian Federal Police Officer and a Federal Protective Services Officer.

"I always enjoyed my time being a Protective Service Officer, so when the opportunity presented itself to join PSG, I jumped at it," PSO Cavanagh said.

For PSO Teresa Wilson‑Teles, beginning her career with Protective Services Group fulfils a strong sense of duty to serve her community and society, while also being a positive role model for her daughters.

"I want to show them the importance of service, integrity and making a meaningful contribution," PSO Wilson‑Teles said.

"My favourite part of my time at the Academy was the morning drill. It brings everything together – unity, cohesion and discipline – and highlights how far we've come since day one."

Protective Services recruits undertake a seven-week training program at the QPS Academy in Brisbane before being deployed across Queensland.
