New community park taking shape on former landfill site
The four-hectare former landfill site at Elder Street South in Clarinda has been rehabilitated and is ready to be turned into a park for the community as the latest addition to Kingston's visionary Sandbelt Open Space – Chain of Parks Project.
Last year Council asked the community what sort of park they'd like to see created on the site, we've now used that feedback to help develop an exciting draft concept plan for the new community open space.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the draft plan incorporates the community's desire for an active space with a focus on children and families, that also allows for the enjoyment of nature in the Green Wedge.
"I am incredibly proud of the focus on native and indigenous flora which will add to the biodiversity and canopy cover in Clarinda," said Cr Staikos. "This is a wonderful open space with so much potential and we are excited to get started on creating this new park from a site that was once just a council landfill."
Deputy Mayor and Karkarook Ward Councillor, Hadi Saab said "Included in our draft concept plans is the creation of an adventure woodland – nature play area that will provide children with a space to explore and play, as well as activity zones with outdoor exercise equipment and a hardcourt."
"We want to make sure our draft plans meet the needs and expectations of our community so we're encouraging the community to provide us with feedback." said Cr Saab.
Key features of the draft plans include:
- An adventure woodland - nature play area
- Natural creeks
- Activity zone with outdoor exercise equipment and hardcourt
- Shared path network for pedestrians and cyclists
- Native grassland and grassy woodlands
- Open lawn areas
- Picnic areas, seating and shelter
- Toilet and water facilities
- Parking.
Consultation is now open on the Elder Street South Reserve Park Concept Plans and will close on Sunday 18 April 2021. Visit yourkingstonyoursay.com.au to provide feedback.
While the concept plans are being finalised, the community will be able to enjoy this new open space from mid-year, once the grass has been established. The park will then be closed in sections while the final designs are constructed.
