A refreshed structure for government services has come into effect, with 10 reshaped departments established to strengthen the State economy, create jobs and build vital public infrastructure.
New structures are in place for around 3,000 operational staff as part of targeted public sector reform. This will better connect teams with related functions and create specialised centres of excellence in areas such as building, economic diversification and tourism, arts and sport.
Work continues to fully implement the targeted reforms, with reshaped departments in operation from today:
- Department of Energy and Economic Diversification- includes Energy Policy WA given energy's critical role in Western Australia's economic development;
- Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport- strengthens positioning of WA as a fantastic place to visit and live;
- Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration- specific focus on developing the resources industry;
- Department of the Premier and Cabinet - new offices created for Defence Industries and Early Childhood. Coordinator General role added to enhance whole of government coordination for priority economic projects;
- Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety- focused contact point for key regulatory functions;
- Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure- includes the Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery (OMID), created to enhance major building capacity from across government including responsibility for building hospitals;
- Department of Housing and Works- brings together building and maintenance for all smaller State infrastructure such as social housing and schools, including management of social housing;
- Department of Treasury and Finance- brings full oversight of all Treasury, State Revenue and procurement policy functions;
- Department of Health- with major health infrastructure to be delivered by OMID, has a renewed focus on the delivery of health services; and
- Department of Communities- increased focus on delivering services for vulnerable members of the Western Australian community.
As stated byPremier Roger Cook:
"Establishing these departments is an important milestone in implementing my government's vision for the State.
"It allows us to pursue our priorities of creating jobs, increasing capacity in our hospitals and getting more homes built for Western Australians.
"Government services are now structured in a way that brings together the skills and expertise of the public sector to best deliver for Western Australians in 2025 and beyond.
"Diversifying the economy is vital to create jobs in communities across the State; this is a focus across government including many of the reshaped departments.
"Just as important is ensuring we are set up to efficiently deliver vital public infrastructure needed for a rapidly growing population such as new hospitals, schools and police stations.
"I thank the staff and leaders of the departments for their ongoing commitment to implementing the reform and delivering high-quality services for Western Australians."
