This week Rockhampton Regional Council will be sending out copies of a new book full of age appropriate, tips and hints to help children be prepared and stay safe during a disaster.

'Be Disaster Ready in the Rockhampton Region' is a full colour, cartoon picture book aimed at year five to six students, and teachers in the Rockhampton Region will soon receive copies of this fun and interactive resource to keep in the classroom.

Mayor Tony Williams said education, especially in our younger generations, is an important way to build community resilience.

"Our Region is no stranger to natural disasters including floods, fires, storms, cyclones, heat waves and now of course the ever-lingering threat of COVID- 19," Mayor Williams said.

We want to make sure that we are arming our children with the right knowledge, at the right time, to ensure they make the right decisions when they need them most.

"Following extensive local and state wide research, children have been identified as playing a key role in developing community resilience.

"Through early education, children are not only able to learn how to keep themselves safe, but they are also known to take what they learn at school and share it with family members and the wider community.

"Any parent, grandparent, or guardian can tell you, when a child is taught an important lesson at school and their family are not across it – they soon will be!

"This book also coincides with the release a cartoon video that will help reinforce the message and embed those learnings!
