Narrandera Shire Council is proud to announce the official opening of the new Discovery Zone at the Destination and Discovery Hub on Wednesday 10 September 2025 at 5.30pm.
Designed to captivate, educate and inspire, the Discovery Zone brings together culture, history, science and storytelling in an engaging and interactive space for all ages. At the heart of the exhibit is an immersive experience where ancient knowledge and modern science are woven together. A Wiradjuri fish trap in the Murrumbidgee River is brought to life through sound, light, and moving imagery. In parallel, the story of the river today unfolds through the lens of science and conservation.
Beyond this, the Discovery Zone offers new ways to engage with Narrandera Shire's people and places. A short film in the theatrette features local talent, highlighting the best of Narrandera's past and present, while interpretive displays and an interactive touch table invite visitors to explore Narrandera Shire's landscapes and stories. Even familiar favourites have been reimagined - the Big Playable Guitar is enhanced with sound and lights, transforming a playful icon into an even more memorable encounter.
The Discovery Zone experience is completed by a new augmented reality app, bringing Narrandera's stories to life in entirely new ways. Visitors will be able to engage with a historical icon that might soon be lost to time, encounter our wildlife in new ways, and discover attractions throughout the Shire with an interactive map. Blending curiosity, creativity, and technology, the app extends the Discovery Zone beyond the walls of the Destination and Discovery Hub, shaping the future of the visitor experience.
The opening of the Discovery Zone marks a proud moment for Narrandera Shire, Mayor Neville Kschenka said, "This innovative space not only celebrates our rich cultural heritage and natural environment but also redefines how visitors experience our Shire."

The project is the culmination of Narrandera's Destination and Discovery Hub, with the exploratory zone funded through the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Narrandera Shire Council.
The community is warmly invited to join Council and special guests for the official opening at 5.30pm on 10 September 2025 at the Destination and Discovery Hub, 26 Cadell Street, Narrandera.
