New Federal Council meets gender target

Australian Medical Association

The AMA membership has elected a new Federal Council to begin its term from August, meeting the AMA's interim gender target of 40 percent female and 60 percent male representation on Federal Council.

The new Federal Council was elected through a process which began in April with AMA members nominating for, contesting and voting on 10 of the 16 Federal Council positions. The results have just been finalised and can be viewed here.

The election of the next AMA President and Vice President will be held on 31 July, with nominations closing on Friday 15 July. The new President and Vice President will become members of the new Federal Council.

Appointments of three additional members to Federal Council by the Councils of General Practice, Rural Doctors and Doctors in Training will be finalised in July. The appointment of an external member will additionally be determined by Federal Council.

The Council is composed of five practice group representatives, 12 specialty group representatives, eight state nominees, three ordinary members, one independent representative and one representative each for the Australian Medical Students' Association and the Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association.

The Federal AMA has a gender target of 40 per cent women, 40 per cent men, and 20 per cent flexible for all AMA Councils, Committees and Boards. A target of women holding 50 per cent of AMA elected positions has been set.

The AMA thanks all doctors for their nominations, congratulates all newly elected Federal Council representatives and looks froward to working with them and those yet-to-be elected for the new term commencing 1 August 2022 and concluding 31 July 2024.
