The Australian Government has announced 5 successful applicants to train the next generation of Australian seafarers.
The Maritime Skills and Training Initiative (MSTI) will strengthen Australia's maritime workforce capability by giving trainees and cadets the sea time they need to qualify for international certification.
The government has invested $13.8 million in the initiative to address critical skills shortages across Australia's maritime sector.
Funding will support more than 20 trainee and cadet seafarers each year over the next 4 years, helping to cover wages, accommodation, food and transportation.
The successful applicants are:
- Teekay Shipping (Australia) Pty Ltd
- Maritime Employees Training Ltd
- Boluda Towage (Australia) Pty Ltd
- Siera Marine Management Pty Ltd
- Sea Swift Pty Ltd.
Additional funding of $2.5 million in Industry Skills Australia will complement the program, help tackle training barriers and strengthen pathways into maritime careers.
MSTI responds to key recommendations of the 2023 Strategic Fleet Taskforce Report by expanding access to essential training berths on vessels and complements the government's broader investment in the Maritime Strategic Fleet pilot program.
