New Judges to Federal Circuit Court of Australia will assist Tasmanian families involved in family law disputes

A ceremonial sitting of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia will be held in Launceston on Friday 4 June to officially welcome Judge Marcus Turnbull and Judge Sandra Taglieri, who were recently appointed to the Court. Justice Terry McGuire was also recently appointed to the Family Court of Australia.

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Attorney-General for Australia will also be attending the event on behalf of the Commonwealth government, along with members of the Tasmanian legal profession.

The Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia and Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, the Hon Will Alstergren said that the appointments of new judges to serve the Tasmania community was critically important.

"I sincerely welcome Judge Taglieri and Judge Turnbull to the Court. The appointment of such highly qualified and experienced judges to our Court in Tasmania is a reflection of the importance of family law to the local community, across all areas of the State. Judge Sandra Taglieri is a very experienced Barrister and the immediate past President of the Tasmanian Bar, and Judge Marcus Turnbull was recently a partner at Ogilvie Jennings and is a very experienced solicitor and advocate. Both are highly regarded, and leaders in the Tasmanian legal profession," the Chief Justice said.

"Last year, the Commonwealth Government announced $5.4 million (over four years) to fund the relocation of new court premises in Launceston to provide safer facilities for people involved in family law and other proceedings. The Court is very much looking forward to the new Launceston court house. A preferred site has been identified and I expect significant progress will be made soon," Chief Justice Alstergren added.

Judge Turnbull will be responsible for managing cases and sitting in the Launceston registry, which services all regions of north Tasmania.

"I am honoured to have been appointed to the Court and in particular, to sit in Launceston, Burnie as well as Hobart. The local community can be assured that I will be dedicated to ensuring that family law matters are dealt with swiftly, while focusing on outcomes that are in the best interests of the children. Northern Tasmania also has the support of a hard-working and committed legal profession," Judge Turnbull said.

Judge Taglieri said it is a privilege to have been appointed to the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, especially so as the merger of the Court with the Family Court of Australia proceeds. "The merger presents as an exciting opportunity to ensure the Tasmanian community is well served in both family and general federal law cases," she added.
