New pavilions coming to Colchester Reserve and Wally Tew Reserve

New sports pavilions at Colchester Reserve and Wally Tew Reserve are a step closer after Council awarded the tender to Modular Spaces Pty Ltd to construct the much-needed community facilities.

When completed, Colchester Reserve in Boronia will have four change rooms, plus new amenities, office space, medical rooms, storage and cleaner's rooms.

Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully will get two change rooms, plus new amenities including public toilet facilities, office space, medical rooms, and storage and cleaner's rooms. Both buildings will be fitted with accessible ramps and decks to cater for all abilities.

The total cost of both pavilions is $2.6 million, and includes a Victorian Government grant of $500,000 announced in March 2019. Construction is expected to start offsite in June and be completed around November 2019.

This project follows the successful delivery of modular buildings at Batterham Reserve and Knox Gardens Reserve in 2018. Around 90 per cent of the build occurs in a factory off-site, before the building is transported, joined and finished at the final location.

The buildings are constructed from sustainably-sourced, engineered timber products, and include low-energy LED lighting to help reduce running costs in the future.

As stated by Mayor, Cr Jake Keogh:

  • A surge in local sports participation, especially among junior players and women, has forced Council to consider new and innovative ways to provide additional facilities to help meet demand.
  • We know how important it is to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle and Council is committed to playing its part in providing greater opportunities for participation in local sports.
  • Prefabricated modular buildings are a fast and cost-effective way to build, and an ideal way to construct facilities like the change rooms at Batterham Reserve and Knox Gardens Reserve, and these new pavilions.
  • As most of the construction happens off-site, there is much less disruption for people who use the grounds.
