New PCYC Logan precinct

Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

A $14 million indoor sports centre, run by the PCYC Logan, has opened at Cronulla Park, Slacks Creek, in a boost for the Palaszczuk Government's COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman said the Palaszczuk Government had backed the Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre with a $6.6 million contribution to the project, in partnership with the City of Logan.

"This is so much more than an indoor sporting complex, it's also the new home of the Logan PCYC and will be a hub for our local families," Ms Fentiman said.

"Cronulla Park will be a great asset for our Logan community with its state-of-the-art facilities including the fitness Centre, gymnasium, training studio and playground."

Member for Woodridge and Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said delivery of the new PCYC has been crucial for Logan's economic recovery.

"I know how much this PCYC means to our community. It's already been a huge boost during the pandemic," Mr Dick said.

"This is a place where friendships will be made and dreams realised, and I'm proud to have helped secure the funding to bring this project to life.

"It's also proven a great job creator, supporting 46 construction jobs, with plenty more operational roles to come.

"The Palaszczuk Government will continue working closely with council to build more community infrastructure for the people of Logan."

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said choosing to establish Cronulla Park as a world-class training facility for young Logan residents with an Olympic dream was the right choice.

"The venue presents a healthy and positive opportunity for aspiring Logan athletes ahead of Queensland's transformational 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Mr de Brenni said.

"It's been four years since we chose to build facilities for young athletes instead of progressing the earmarked greyhound racing track and now we've secured an Olympics, it proves it was the right call for our community.

"This is a strong example of what the Queensland Government and local councils can achieve by genuinely listening to the community and working together for the benefit of local residents."

Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre is a modern, 4700 m2 complex featuring a 24-hour gym with full-sized boxing ring, a rhythmic and artistic gymnastics hall, multi-purpose rooms with sprung floors for dancing and martial arts, an administration centre and car park for 90 vehicles.

With a large outdoor playground, Outside School Hours Care is available at the Cronulla Park complex for up to 100 young students.

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the centre's possibilities were almost endless.

"Cronulla Park's PCYC precinct gives coaches and mentors the facilities they need to have a positive influence on the lives of young Queenslanders," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"This will become Logan City's centre for youth outreach and Indigenous programs, as well as initiatives to help the community stay active.

"Cronulla Park has potential as a regional training facility for elite gymnasts and an incubator for young Queenslanders to launch their Olympic and Paralympic dreams ahead of South-east Queensland's 2032 Games."

Logan City Mayor Darren Power said the PCYC was a great addition to the network of sport and recreation facilities across the city.

"There are many benefits from participating in physical activity and the programs that will be run from the new facility," Cr Power said.

"These include improved individual mental health and well-being and increased social cohesion.

"The building we have designed in conjunction with the PCYC responds to the needs of the community and delivers a modern fitness and recreation centre for Logan's young people."

PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Officer Phil Schultz said it was rewarding to see their new Logan club reach completion.

"We are entering a new era with an exciting new home for PCYC Logan where we can build opportunities for young people in Logan," Mr Schultz said.

"The PCYC is all about supporting young people and the community with innovative activities, programs, outside school hours care and more."
