After feedback received earlier this year, alternative sites have been proposed for new pedestrian safety upgrade works in Horsham's Central Activity District.
Funding bodies Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) and Department of Transport (DoT) have offered Council funding to undertake works to make footpath travel around Horsham safer and more attractive.
Six new sites were approved by Council at the 27 June meeting. They were:
1. McLachlan / Firebrace roundabout – pinned rubber raised 'wombat' crossings
2. Firebrace Street crossing between McLachlan Street and Roberts Ave – pinned rubber raised 'wombat' crossing
3. Pynsent Street pedestrian crossing in front of Town Hall
4. Wilson Street – pedestrian refuge island
5. Darlot Street at Gleed Street – raised crossing
6. O'Callaghans Pde / Firebrace Street – raised crossings
Four earlier sites for safety works were reconsidered after concerns were raised about the potential impact of works on retail trade and traffic flow as part of the engagement on Council's CAD Streetscape Plan.
Director of Infrastructure John Martin says that the new proposed sites and designs respond to this feedback.
"The new options that have been put forward can be constructed quickly, and are further away from high density retail trade areas," he said.
"It is intended that prioritising pedestrian safety in Horsham will encourage more people to visit, with greater potential for retail trade and other activities in the city."
The estimated cost of these works is $600,000 and will be fully funded by State and Federal Governments through RRV.
