New playground for Macquarie Lions park, Dubbo

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) will continue its successful Playground Improvement Program by installing a new inclusive playground in Macquarie Lions Park, Dubbo. The new and improved play space will replace the existing equipment that has reached its end of useful life.

Dubbo Region Mayor Stephen Lawrence said the new play space will maximise community inclusion within Macquarie Lions Park. "The existing playground within Macquarie Lions Park is well utilised by the community and customers of the Visitor Information Centre (VIC). The works will create an inclusive space with improvements to access for the whole community and will be a wonderful addition to the area," said Councillor Lawrence.

Acting Director of Liveability Ian McAlister said the new play space will be relocated within the park to maximise accessibility. "The play space design and new location within Macquarie Lions Park are in line with the NSW Government's Everyone Can Play guideline principles, to create an inclusive play space for all ages and abilities."

The new play space includes;

• A combination unit including; climbing, sliding, and imaginative play.

• Low-level balance trail

• Voice tubes

• Hula rocker

• All abilities birds nest swing set

• Inclusive saucer

• Accessible soft fall surfacing strategically located beneath high-wear zones and for users to access inclusive play elements.

• Natural and manufactured shade

The project will cost approximately $140,000 and has been fully funded by DRC under Council's Playground Improvement Fund and Asset Renewal Budget. Construction is scheduled to commence Monday 26 July 2021, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed within four weeks. Council staff have been working closely with the Farmers Markets Committee and other stakeholders to ensure the construction and the new location of the playground has a minimal impact on events.

Following the successful completion of the play space installation, Council will remove the existing playground equipment and carry out restoration of the site.

Council staff will be at the Farmers Markets at the RSL under cover car park this Saturday to display the new play space design, and discuss this exciting upcoming project.
