New roadmap to encourage carbon capture and utilisation technologies

The CO2 Utilisation Roadmap aims to help industry adopt carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies that reduce emissions.

CSIRO released the roadmap, outlining cost-effective ways for industry to adopt CCU. It details how CCU can help reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as:

  • cement
  • steel
  • plastics
  • transport.

CCU is the process of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and recycling it for further use. The CO2 can be used in commercial products and building materials.

The roadmap identifies 4 areas where CCU could make a significant impact:

  • direct use of CO2 in the food and beverage industry
  • mineral carbonation
  • conversion of CO2 into chemicals and fuels
  • biological conversion of CO2.

The roadmap considers the advantages and barriers to scaling-up CCU in Australia. It draws on extensive national and international consultation and analysis.
