New Slade Point social housing complete

  • Construction is complete on new $550,000 social housing property in Slade Point
  • The property is a three-bedroom home for a larger family who requires housing support in their time of need
  • It's part of a record $3.9 billion for social and affordable housing – the single-largest concentrated investment in Queensland's history.

A local family in need of housing will soon move into a newly completed three-bedroom social home in Slade Point.

The new home, designed to accommodate a larger family, was delivered as part of the Palaszczuk Government's record $3.9 billion investment in social and affordable housing.

98 new social homes will be underway in the Mackay-Whitsunday region by mid-2025 through a planned investment of $36 million.

This investment will boost the economy by supporting more than 112 full-time equivalent construction jobs.

Earlier in the week Housing Minster Meaghan Scanlon also met with local housing providers and homelessness services to hear their views and discuss innovative solutions to get more people into safe homes.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

"Since coming to office in 2015, we have delivered an average of 10 new social homes every week, including this three-bedroom home here in Slade Point.

"In addition to delivering social housing units and apartments, we're know there are larger families in need. This new property will soon be a place to call home for a local family.

"National housing pressures are being felt across the country, so we're meeting with local service providers to see how we can work with them to deliver better outcomes for people in need.

"This project is another example of the work being done to help Queenslanders get a secure roof over their head when they need it most."

Quotes attributable to Julieanne Gilbert, Member for Mackay:

"This property will be a much welcome addition to our social housing stock here in Mackay.

"We have almost 2500 social housing properties here in the Mackay-Whitsunday region, and we know there is demand for more social housing.

"That's why we will commence almost 100 new social homes in the region by mid 2025."
