Seven new side loader trucks equipped with AI pedestrian detection are joining Townsville City Council's waste collection fleet in an Australian first.
The trucks include a fully integrated control system to help drivers identify pedestrians around the vehicle, manufactured by Australian company Superior Pak.
Council will be the first organisation in Australia to use this specific technology on its waste collection vehicles, with further plans to roll out the technology on an additional five trucks in its fleet.
Mayor Nick Dametto said the introduction of the new trucks and the innovative AI technology showed Council's commitment to getting the basics right.
"Waste collection is a core service that Council delivers to the community, and the addition of these new waste collection trucks means we have modern, reliable vehicles that are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art hazard reduction technology," Cr Dametto said.
"Safety is top of mind for all Council staff, especially when they are interacting with the public. The AI pedestrian system will add another measure to keep our pedestrians and our crew safe.
"Not only will the system warn the driver if there is a pedestrian too close, but it will notify pedestrians if they are in the truck's danger zone."
Cr Dametto said the upgrades to the fleet would also improve routine maintenance and servicing as part of Council's focus on getting back to basics.
"As Mayor, I'm committed to leading a council that delivers value-for-money services and the basics that ratepayers expect and deserve," he said.
"Having uniform vehicles across the waste collection fleet makes part replacement and servicing more efficient, reduces service disruptions, and keeps as many trucks on the road as possible.
"It means ratepayers can rely on their bins being collected on time, safely and efficiently."
