The Gold Coast is now home to one of Australia's premier skateboarding destinations with the opening of Pizzey Park Street Style Skate park in Miami.
The world-class skate park underwent a 3,000 square meter extension and upgrade, equalling the size of seven basketball courts.
"Pizzey Park Street Style Skate park has been designed following Olympic standards, which will put us on the international stage in the world of skateboarding and roller sports," said Mayor Tate.
"This upgrade is also an exciting addition to our city's busiest skate park for the locals who regularly enjoy it on their skateboards, bikes, scooters or skates."
Mayor Tate was joined by Federal Member for Moncrieff Angie Bell to officially open the $5.6 million revamped skate park today, after 14 months of construction.
The project is a joint initiative between City of Gold Coast and the Australian Government with $900,000 worth of funding contributed through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Federal Member for Moncrieff, Angie Bell said, "Collaboration between both the local and Australian Governments is vital to the continued development and success of recreational and competitive sport on the Gold Coast.
"We continue to produce world-class athletes and Gold Medallist Olympians in a range of categories, projects like Pizzey Park, funded partly by the Australian Government, will provide infrastructure for the community to enjoy recreational activity in our region or further develop to compete professionally."
"The Morrison Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program has committed more than $43.9 million to the Gold Coast City Council since 2020 to upgrade and develop old and new projects that will positively impact residents in the region."
The upgrade has increased the capacity to host skating competitions and will include the added features of banks, rails, ledges, stairs, hubbas, blocks, kickers, extensive flats and a big bank extension with skateable signage for advanced riders.
There will be improved shaded seating areas, new lighting for the skate park and car park, an increase in parking capacity, and a bus drop off area for events or competitions.
Pedestrian pathways in the surrounding areas have been upgraded and include integration with the Miami Aquatic Centre.
A free community event will be held at the skate park tomorrow, Saturday 30 April from 10am to 3pm.
The event will feature skate bowl DJs, skateboarding demos, roller skating and scooter coaching clinics, BMX demos, live music, food trucks, sporting stars, heaps of competitions and free giveaways.
