CDU welcomes its first cohort of Master of Nursing Practice (Pre-Registration) students in Alice Springs

For the first time at the Charles Darwin University Alice Springs Campus the University has welcomed its first cohort of 40 Master of Nursing Practice (Pre-Registration) students.

All classes and simulation blocks will be delivered face to face at the CDU Alice Springs campus, with students undertaking their clinical placements will be delivered across Central Australia.

CDU Associate Vice-Chancellor Central Australia and Barkly Jodie Summers said this course will help address real workforce shortages across our health services and provide economic benefits to Alice Springs.

"This program will not only bring additional students to Central Australia, but it also supports our campus to offer these opportunities to students here locally, to train as nurses or healthcare professionals, helping address real workforce shortages," Ms Summers said.

"This program will directly benefit our region and our communities by offering training and placements that will hopefully lead to meaningful employment in areas that need it the most."

CDU Pro Vice-Chancellor Faculty of Health Professor Dominic Upton said the program is designed for a location such as Central Australia as there is a major focus on evidence-based person and family centered-care and respect for diverse contexts, cultures and communities.

"This course is designed to prepare nursing students for a broad range of healthcare settings not only public and private settings but also specialty areas such as community health, acute and chronic care," Professor Upton said.

Over the last two years more courses have become available with flexible options for residents of Central Australia and the Barkly including the Bachelor of Midwifery and Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.

Professor Upton said CDU is looking to offer additional health courses in Alice Springs that will provide pathways into the health sector including the Diploma of Nursing which will commence in April this year.
