Join us at the University of Helsinki's Night of the Arts events on 20 August to enjoy music, dance, two exhibitions and a drawing sessions. Detailed descriptions of events organised at the University are in the programme below.
HELSINKI UNIVERSITY MUSEUM FLAME (Fabianinkatu 33, 1st floor)
16.00-21.00 Angeloscope exhibition and an artist meet-up
presents people's conceptions of angels through Hanne Kiiveri's photographic art and multidisciplinary research. Explore the exhibition and meet Kiiveri, who will be discussing her works from 18.00 to 20.00. The artist will give 15-minute glimpses into a few selected works.
AGORA, UNIVERSITY MAIN BUILDING (Fabianinkatu 33, 1st floor)
17.00-20.00
Come and try drawing in the covered Agora courtyard of the University's Main Building. Members of the Ylioppilasmiekkailijat (Student Fencers) club will serve as models in the croquis drawing session, with visual artist Vappu Rossi, who holds the position of drawing master at Helsinki University Museum Flame, as the teacher.
The session is non-stop. Please bring with you a sketchbook or pad and preferred drawing implements, or borrow equipment on site. Previous experience of croquis drawing (or fencing) is not necessary.
GREAT HALL OF THE UNIVERSITY (Aleksanterinkatu 5 / Unioninkatu 34, 2nd floor)
17.00-20.00 Non-stop concert by Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra
After celebrating its centenary in April, the will delight audiences on the Night of the Arts with a non-stop concert in the University's Great Hall. Pop in to enjoy the performance of skilled student musicians and visit the distinguished venue, which serves as the main stage for academic events and festivities at the University.
THINK CORNER (Yliopistonkatu 4)
15.00-17.00
Explore an exhibition on the carbon cycle of green spaces and create art about treetops. The exhibition illustrates the locations where Helsinki breathes and how home gardeners can make a difference. On the Night of the Arts, the CO-CARBON project group will be at the exhibition from 15.00 to 17.00, while treetops will be created in a drawing workshop.
THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FINLAND (Unioninkatu 36)
18.00-21.00
On the Night of the Arts, 20 August, the - a cultural partner of the National Library of Finland - will bring to Cupola Hall a multi-sensory performance speculating on Jean Sibelius's experimental music. The work in question is Juho Laitinen's composition Kraftverk, for synthesisers, a narrator and dancers. The work opens to the public at 18.00. A concert-like, melodramatic segment featuring a reading of Sibelius's letter, set to the sounds of a Jupiter synth, will be performed twice: at 18.30 and 19.30.
The University's Night of the Arts events are open and free to all.
