Council has released a draft Tree Protection and Management Policy, reinforcing its commitment to protecting the Shire's iconic green canopy while prioritising community safety and wants to hear from the community.

The draft policy introduces a clear, risk-based framework for managing trees across Council-managed land, including streets, parks and reserves. It aims to strike a careful balance between maintaining public safety and preserving the significant environmental, social and economic benefits trees provide.

Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said trees are central to Nillumbik's identity and liveability.

"Trees are one of our community's most valued assets. They provide shade, support biodiversity, improve wellbeing and help us respond to climate change," Cr Joiner said.

"This policy ensures we are protecting and growing our urban canopy while managing risks responsibly and transparently."

There are three key priorities in the draft policy:

  • Avoid tree removal wherever possible
  • Minimise removal using best-practice arboriculture
  • Offset unavoidable removal through replanting and urban forest programs

The policy supports Council's broader goal of maintaining and increasing canopy cover while protecting biodiversity and habitat.

Community consultation and clear communication are central to the policy, with improved processes for:

  • Responding to community requests and complaints
  • Providing information about tree works and decisions
  • Offering review pathways where residents disagree with outcomes

"We know how strongly our community cares about trees," Mayor Cr Joiner said.

"That's why this policy places a strong focus on transparency, consistent decision-making and opportunities for community input."

The community is invited to provide feedback on the draft Tree Protection and Management Policy until Tuesday 28 July 2026.
