Nobel laureates and other leading personalities from science, business and culture declared their concern with the health of the ocean through the Jury Declaration of the 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards, one of Spain's most prestigious science prizes.

The 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards Jury Declaration highlighted the alarming state of the oceans, and urged all countries, the public and private actors "to adopt immediately effective measures to counteract the deterioration of the health of the oceans and preserve the inherited natural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations".

Consisting of 19 Nobel laureates and leading personalities from science, business and culture, the 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards Jury reaffirmed the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the IPCC Special report on Ocean and the Cryosphere (expected to be released in September 2019) as the best frameworks to mobilize action toward a more resilient and sustainable ocean.
