Noongar festival weekend at Yagan Square

  • Bunuru Festival to celebrate Aboriginal culture with three days of free family entertainment at DevelopmentWA's Yagan Square
  • Festival runs from Friday March 13 to Sunday March 15
  • Yagan Square will host the third annual Bunuru Festival where locals and visitors to the city can enjoy a weekend of free dance and musical performances, children's activities and more.

Bunuru is known as the Noongar second summer and the hottest of the six seasons. The Festival is a time to celebrate Aboriginal culture in the heart of the city.

The Bunuru Festival will showcase Aboriginal arts, crafts, clothing and food through local market stalls, and will also include children's interactive workshops with headband making, Noongar dance, storytelling and more.

Friday and Saturday evenings will host Aboriginal dance and performances with a special corroboree on Saturday night, and renowned Aboriginal composer and violinist Eric Avery performing on both nights.

Since opening two years ago in March 2018, Yagan Square has claimed an important place in Perth's social and cultural landscape, hosting numerous events and celebrations.

It has become an outstanding example of the benefits of creating a vibrant space that honours Western Australian history, lifestyle, landscape and produce.

As stated by Lands and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt:

"Yagan Square has been designed to incorporate stories from the Noongar people and has a strong sense of place, reflective of culture and history.

"This is a special festival in Perth's event calendar that gives locals and visitors alike the opportunity to celebrate Western Australia's Noongar culture."
