A colourful new mural created by local artists and young people has transformed a Northbridge laneway into a vibrant welcoming space, encouraging community safety and crime prevention.
Officially unveiled yesterday, the mural spans the entire eastern wall of the Via Torre laneway and is the result of a partnership between the City of Perth, the WA Police Graffiti Team, Mission Australia's Youthbeat, the Salvation Army and local professional mural artists, 'Too Much Colour'.
Young people, aged between 12 and 18 years, worked with the professional artists during a series of workshops in January to create the mural with the theme Future Lost Cities.
Mission Australia's youth workers were on-site during the workshops, to provide support, guidance and education to the project participants.
The artwork joins hundreds of colourful murals throughout Perth, supported and encouraged by the City, that help attract visitors, boost community safety and benefit local businesses.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the mural was further evidence of the City's commitment to making Perth a safer, more liveable city by engaging with the community in safety and crime prevention projects and creating inviting public places.
"This project is a great example of the City actively collaborating with the WA Police through the State Graffiti Hotspot Fund, to reduce graffiti and achieve great outcomes," Mr Zempilas said.
"Not only does this artwork add colour and vibrancy to the streetscape, it has engaged young people to build new skills and create legal urban art."
