Nourishing Neighbourhoods Supporting Local Food Systems

Nourishing neighbourhoods.png

Murrindindi Shire continues to grow stronger, healthier and more connected through the Nourishing Neighbourhoods program, now in its second year of a three-year partnership with Mitchell Shire Council funded by VicHealth.

The program focuses on strengthening local food systems, with approximately $36,000 distributed across Murrindindi Shire to support community-led initiatives that make healthy food more accessible and bring people together.

Funded projects are already making a difference across the Shire. Initiatives include backyard harvest and produce-sharing activities, new food growing spaces, expanded community gardens, and food literacy resources for local kindergartens.

Grants have been awarded to a range of local organisations, including:

  • Embassy of Ideas
  • Alexandra District Health
  • Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House
  • Menzies Support Services
  • Scripture Union Victoria

In addition, Omnia Health will deliver a community cooking and food literacy program across both Mitchell and Murrindindi Shires. The program will support local facilitators while building practical skills, knowledge and connections within the community.

Together, these initiatives reflect a shared commitment to improving access to healthy food, strengthening local networks, and creating a more sustainable and resilient food system for the future.
