Watch and act: Limit time outside

What you need to do
  • Monitor weather conditions and warnings issued via the Bureau of Meteorology's weather services
  • Monitor all warnings from emergency services in your area
  • Check for any services out in your area. Power, water, communication services may have outages during heatwaves or other emergency events
  • Continue to stay hydrated before, during and after heatwave and extreme heat conditions
  • Limit time outside. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat, sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you
  • Monitor and assist vulnerable and at-risk people who may need help during a heatwave
  • Recognise the signs of heat related illnesses that may affect yours or others' health
  • Never leave children, adults or pets alone in a vehicle. It can be deadly. The temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise very quickly
  • Continue to keep cool. Seek air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made of natural fabrics
  • Storage of Medications. Some medications require cool storage to be effective
  • Monitor weather, power, water and transport forecasts and warnings via TV or battery-operated radio
  • Check-in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat — your neighbour living alone, older people, children and babies, people with a medical condition and don't forget your pets
  • Know your emergency kit contents and location in case of services outages. Stock with medications, water, food, portable battery-operated radio, mobile phone and charger, any special requirements for infants, elderly, injured or disabled persons.
