Statement attributable to NSW Farmers President, Rebecca Reardon
NSW Farmers welcomes today's announcement from the Coalition regarding firearms reform.
Our position remains that firearms are legitimate tools of trade for farmers and play an important role in the day-to-day management of farming operations across New South Wales.
Since the reforms were announced, NSW Farmers has been working on behalf of its members to raise legitimate concerns about the unintended consequences for farm businesses and the unfair treatment of law-abiding firearm owners.
NSW Farmers has consistently argued that if government policy requires a farmer to surrender a legally owned firearm, then that farmer deserves fair and reasonable compensation.
We have also made clear that farmers should not be constrained by arbitrary firearm ownership caps that fail to recognise the practical needs of modern agriculture.
Firearm reforms should be fair, proportionate and informed by the experiences of those directly affected.
Farmers understand the importance of strong firearms laws and safe communities, but good policy must also be practical, evidence-based and developed in genuine partnership with the people it affects.
Regardless of the political debate surrounding these reforms, NSW Farmers will continue advocating on behalf of its members to ensure they are treated fairly and have access to the tools they need to run successful and productive farm businesses.
