NTU ranks in the global top 5 in five subjects, with materials science being named the world’s No.1 for the third consecutive year
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) continues its upward momentum in the global universities league tables, moving up 6 places to No.43 and taking the top 5 spots in five subjects in the latest US News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings. NTU also ranks third among Asia’s best universities.
NTU retained its global No.1 position in Materials Science for the third consecutive year, and No.2 in Computer Science for the second year running. NTU’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering debuted at the No.4 spot, while Chemistry is also placed in the No.4 spot. Engineering kept its global No.5 position.
Over the last 12 months, NTU Singapore has climbed to its highest ever position in every major international league table. NTU’s overall improvement in the US News & World Report global rankings was driven by its strong global and regional research reputation that jumped 16 places and 6 places respectively. NTU has climbed 82 places from the 125th spot since this rankings was started six years ago.
NTU President, Professor Subra Suresh, said, “The latest ranking by the US News & World Report demonstrates NTU’s steady upward trajectory among the world’s best universities, and represents a significant achievement for NTU faculty, staff and students. It clearly shows that NTU’s education and research are increasingly being recognised for their global impact and areas of excellence.”
Published annually, the US News & World Report rankings is based on 13 indicators that measure universities in their academic research performance and their global and regional reputations. Now into its sixth year, the rankings evaluated 1,500 institutions from more than 80 countries to provide a comprehensive assessment of research universities around the world.
NTU’s rising global reputation and research impact across multiple fields has enabled it to consistently climb up the international rankings in the last few years. NTU is ranked No. 11 in the world this year as well as No.1 young university for the sixth consecutive year by QS. Earlier in February, NTU scored its best performance with five subject areas in the global top 10, and 21 subjects in the world’s top 50, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Materials Science (3rd) led the pack, followed by Electrical & Electronic Engineering (6th), Communication & Media Studies (8th), Chemistry (9th) and Civil & Structural Engineering (10th).
In the ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, NTU surged 23 places from 2018 to 73rd place this year. NTU was also the only Singapore university with five subjects ranked among the world’s top 10 in the ShanghaiRanking’s league table of 54 subjects. Besides two No.1 subjects – Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, and Energy Science & Engineering – NTU was in the global top 10 for Telecommunication Engineering, Instruments Science & Technology, both at No.6, and Materials Science, which climbed 9 places to No.10.
NTU also broke into the global Top 50 list in the Times Higher Education global rankings at 48th position and was placed No. 3 in the Times Higher’s young university league earlier this year.
