OAS Starts Election Monitoring for Ecuador's April 21 Referendum

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Referendum and Popular Consultation that will take place on April 21 in Ecuador began its activities in the country.

The Mission, headed by the former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service of Chile Patricio Santamaría, is made up of 15 experts and observers from 7 countries, who will meet with authorities, representatives of electoral bodies, civil society and registered organizations to campaign in this electoral process.

During the deployment, the members of the Mission will observe aspects related to electoral organization and voting abroad; electoral technology; electoral justice; political-electoral financing and specific issues regarding the exercise of direct democracy.

This is the 27th Mission that the OAS has deployed in Ecuador, and it is possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, the United States, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic.

After election day, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations to support the strengthening of electoral processes in Ecuador.
