Ocean Reef Marina breakwaters now complete

  • Ocean Reef Marina iconic outer breakwater walls now complete, paving way for next phase of development
  • Innovative renewable energy microgrid one of the first of its kind in Australia within a mixed-use marina precinct to be delivered by a Zenith Energy subsidiary
  • Low-cost, clean energy will reduce carbon emissions and is expected to save customers up to 30 per cent on their energy bills

The breakwaters at the iconic Ocean Reef Marina have been completed in a significant milestone for this transformational redevelopment project.

With the first rock placed in early 2021, the final completion of the breakwaters eventually involved 1.25 million tonnes of rock.

The northern breakwater is 670 metres long, while thesouthernbreakwater is1.2 kilometres long. Thebreakwaters canalso reach a maximum height of 8 metres above sea level.

It is expected that the southern breakwater will be open to the public following completion of the next stage of land-based construction in approximately mid-2025.

The iconic development will also be supported by clean, renewable energy produced by an innovative microgrid one of the first in Australia to be deployed within a mixed-use marina precinct.

The Cook Government, through DevelopmentWA, has appointed Ocean Reef Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Zenith Energy, as the operator of the proposed renewable energy electricity microgrid.

Once operational, customers within the coastal redevelopment are expected to save up to 30 per cent on their annual energy bills.

Ocean Reef Marina will initially generate its low-cost renewable energy from a ground-mounted solar array, which will be supplemented with rooftop solar as the development progresses.

Battery technology will be deployed to store and deliver renewable energy within the precinct and Western Power's network will also be available to meet surplus requirements.

Zenith Energy is one of Australia's leading microgrid and remote power specialists - its subsidiary, Peel Renewable Energy, operates Western Australia's first industrial energy microgrid at DevelopmentWA's Peel Business Park.

Ocean Reef Marina is one of the most important development projects in the State. It is expected to create more than 8,600 construction jobs and inject $3 billion into the broader Western Australian economy.

As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:

"The iconic Ocean Reef Marina development is set to become one of Perth's most popular destinations for water-based recreational pursuits. It will be home to Perth's first coastal pool and a family beach with a dive trail within the protection of the marina.

"The marina will have capacity for around 550 pens and a 200-boat stacker facility, while also providing berths for superyachts and other large recreational vessels.

"Ocean Reef Marina will ultimately deliver more than 1,000 new residential dwellings, offering a range of housing options including single residential homes, apartments, and mixed-use developments.

"It will also offer an array of shopping, dining, and entertainment options to residents, visitors and tourists, with up to 12,000sqm of retail and commercial floor space, and more than 5ha of community space.

"The grid-connected embedded network will deliver clean energy and reduce carbon emissions at the marina, in line with the Government's commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

"This renewable energy project joins other innovative approaches to development and planning at the world-class Ocean Reef Marina, including Perth's first coastal pool and the construction of two-kilometre-long breakwaters."

As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

"The completion of the breakwaters marks a significant milestone for the Ocean Reef Marina.

"With Joondalup being the second CBD of Perth, and a hub of innovation, I'm delighted that Ocean Reef Marina will be powered by a renewable energy microgrid.

"The design process for the marina has included consideration ofleading-edge techniques in construction, waste management, water servicing and smart technology, which is befitting of this iconic development.

"There continues to be strong community support for the marina project, with locals keenly watching construction progress of what will be a tourism destination in the heart of the northern corridor."
