Officers Escort 80-Year-Old to Anzac Day Dawn Service

Two Queensland police officers went above and beyond in the early hours of Anzac Day, ensuring 80-year-old Mr Michael Darby made it safely to a dawn service after becoming stranded in wet weather.

At approximately 1am on Saturday 25 April, officers received a call for help from an elderly man who was stuck alone in the rain at Kangaroo Point after missing his bus to a dawn service near Manly RSL.

Concerned for his welfare, Acting Sergeant Ryan Baillie and his partner Acting Sergeant Andrew Kitas were quick to check on him.

Michael served as a civilian who organised assistance for refugees and provided support deploying medical teams to Guam during the Vietnam War,

After learning Michael was trying to make his way to commemorate Anzac Day, the officers quickly stepped in to assist.

They carefully dismantled his mobility scooter and loaded it into their police vehicle to transport both the man and his belongings.

In good spirits despite the situation, the officers shared a light-hearted moment with Michael, joking that he was 'like Cinderella' as they removed his shoes to help him comfortably into the back seat of the car.

Thanks to their quick thinking and compassion, the man arrived safely at his destination in time to take part in the dawn service.

This act of kindness highlights the commitment of police to supporting the community, particularly on a day of such significance, ensuring those who have served are able to be honoured and remembered.
