Operation Motorway Stops Nearly 600 Drivers

Police have conducted a traffic operation in the northern suburbs targeting motorists driving at excessive speed.

Since October 1 until today (Wednesday 24 December) between the hours of 5.30am to 7.30am every day, officers from the Road Policing Section and Traffic Camera Section operators undertook a joint operation called Operation Motorway to intercept drivers travelling at excessive and extreme speeds.

Police focused on areas including the Port River Expressway at Wingfield and the North-South Motorway at Regency Park and Bolivar.

Speed detection cameras were set up at various locations with officers in patrol cars ready to intercept any high-speed drivers that were caught by the cameras.

During the operation, police recorded almost 600 speeding offences, six of which were identified as excessive speed. Four of the drivers also had illicit drugs in their system and three were found to be driving without a valid licence.

Three vehicles were also impounded during the operation.

Superintendent Shane Johnson, officer in charge of Traffic Services Branch says, "This operation has clearly delivered significant community road safety results in removing these dangerous speeding and drug drivers from our roads, especially on Christmas Eve, a period where drivers have been urged to take care and drive responsibly."

Anyone who sees dangerous driving on our roads this holiday season is urged to call the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131444.
