While most South Australian's enjoyed the King's birthday weekend unfortunately a number of people were caught doing the wrong thing on the roads.
South Australia Police monitored and patrolled roads across the state during Operation Safe Holidays which ran from Friday 9 June until Monday 12 June 2023.
Thankfully there were no deaths on our roads over the long weekend, but unfortunately there were four serious injuries as a result of collisions during the operation.
Police conducted 14,292 alcotests with 57 positive results during the operation. 608 drug tests were conducted with 61 drivers testing positive to drugs.
54 Vehicles were impounded.
The highest recorded alcohol result was a 51-year-old man from Munno Para who recorded a result of 0.212, more than four times the legal limit.
Police caught 463 speeding drivers, 30 drivers or passengers not wearing their seatbelts, detected 34 distraction offences and impounded 54 cars for a range of offences.
Superintendent Darren Fielke Officer in Charge, Traffic Services Branch said, "We are relieved the weekend was fatality free, and that most drivers drove to the conditions especially given the wet weather, but it is still concerning that some motorists choose to drive with drugs and alcohol in their system. We will continue to target those who choose to ignore the road rules and put others and themselves at risk of serious injury."
