Achieves 300Mbps uplink 5G speed record
Optus has achieved another Australian 5G record, smashing 5G upload speeds as part of its mmWave testing on its live commercial network, together with technology partner Nokia, as it continues to push the possibilities of its super-fast 5G network.
Clocking 300Mbps, the record-breaking upload speed was achieved on Optus 5G mmWave site in Strathpine, Brisbane by combining the carriers 4G 2100 MHz spectrum with mmWave spectrum operating on a single user MIMO (Multi input Multi output) mode using a commercial grade Casa Systems CPE.
Uplink speeds this fast will be a gamechanger for both businesses and consumers who are consistently uploading large amounts of data, like a photography studio uploading high resolution digital images or a digital content creator who needs to upload video files to their social platforms. We already know that our 5G download speeds can be blisteringly fast, but with more content being created and uploaded than ever before, having access to faster upload speeds through mmWave 5G is going to be important for many of our customers, especially in the business space, said Lambo Kanagaratnam, Managing Director Networks, Optus.
Lets say you have a 500MB video file; on current 4G networks that may take around 1 min 30 seconds to upload which is already fast, but with upload speeds in the vicinity of 300Mbps the same task can be completed in less than 20 seconds. For us its important that we are connecting customers with technology that improves their lives and increased upload speeds on mmWave 5G is really going to save time for both businesses and consumers as its rolled out over the coming months.

The record utilized Nokias comprehensive AirScale product portfolio powered by its ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) chipsets for the highest capacity and network performance.
Optus currently has more than 1300 5G sites across Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra as well as key areas outside of these cities. Optus currently has six mmWave sites with more rolling out over the coming months.
