Orange Council Explores Spring Creek Dam Fishing, Records Mattresses Collected

Orange Council

Last night's Council meeting (18 April) made decisions about proposals to allow fishing in Spring Creek Dam, and heard more about this year's bulky waste collection.

Council to look into fishing options at Spring Creek dam

Last night's Council meeting called for a feasibility study into introducing access to Spring Creek Dam for passive watercraft (canoes and kayaks) and land-based fishing/fly casting.

FISHING : Orange City Council will explore options to allow fishing at Spring Creek Dam.

The meeting decided not to permit land or water-based fishing activity at Suma Park Dam at this stage.

According to the report, it would cost around $200,000-$300,000 per year to set up Suma Park Dam as a location for recreational fishing. The list of facilities needed include a water entrance area for launching canoes, paths, toilets, drinking water, rubbish bins, fish cleaning.

A similar cost is estimated for Spring Creek Dam.

The report also included a letter from the NSW Primary Industry Department raising the potential of using Spring Creek dam as a new fishery for native fish such as cod, trout and perch. The letter suggested funding may be available for the project.

More mattresses than ever in bulky waste collection

More mattresses than ever before were collected in this year's bulky waste collection.

A report to last night's meeting showed 574 mattresses were collected during the January/February pick-up this year.

14.35 tonnes of mattresses were transported to a recycling facility where the high-tensile steel was removed.

It's estimated that while 506 tonnes of waste from the collection was sent to landfill, 17% of the total was diverted from landfill for recycling.

A total of 80.46 tonnes of scrap steel and 8 tonnes of refrigerators was collected.

Council to take a fresh look at media policy

Proposed policies to guide how Councillors make media comments will come back to Council for further discussion.

A motion from Crs Kevin Duffy, Jeff Whitton and Tammy Greenhalgh asked for a recent motion adopting a new strategic policy on media guidelines to be rescinded.

Last night's Council meeting (18 April) heard discussion about concerns that the proposed draft policy may limit valid public debate.

The draft Media policy and the Social Engagement policy will be the subject of a future councillor workshop.

IN BRIEF:

The council decided to ask the Airport Community Committee for comment on proposals to name a nearby road after the Hazelton family.
