The CSIRO Board and leadership team are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Emma Johnston.

An authority in marine science and conservation and influential leader in the Australian research sector, Professor Johnston has served on the CSIRO Board since August 2023.

During her time on the Board, she brought her sharp intellect, collegiality and passion for science, the higher education sector and the environment, to our work.

Her unwavering commitment to our people and purpose have left an indelible mark on CSIRO and the broader research community.

Professor Johnston will be remembered not only for her remarkable achievements, but also for her advocacy, generosity, and the care she showed to those around her.

On behalf of the CSIRO Board, leadership team, and staff, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Professor Johnston's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
