Paving Way For New Inner-South Health Centre

The ACT Government is prioritising the delivery of new health infrastructure so more Canberrans can get access to the care they need closer to home.

To support this work, a Draft Major Plan Amendment (DPA-06) is now available for public consultation supporting a new Inner-South Health Centre in Griffith, together with a proposal to declare it a Territory Priority Project.

"The proposed site for the health centre is located near the Griffith local shops, ensuring it is close to other community services with access to parking and public transport connections," said Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith.

"Co-location with Griffith shops will offer convenience for patients, staff and visitors in the area, reflecting the role of Griffith shops as a central hub for the community."

The draft Major Plan Amendment proposes changing the area in Griffith from a PRZ1 Urban Open Space Zone and PRZ2 Restricted Access Recreation Zone, to a CFZ Community Facility Zone.

The Inner South health centre is part of a broader commitment to build four new health centres across the Territory to provide more accessible healthcare for Canberrans.

"The ACT Government wants to deliver this important health infrastructure as quickly as possible to provide the southside with better access to health services, in addition to the South Tuggeranong Health Centre under construction." said Minister Stephen-Smith.

"The Inner-South Centre will complement our existing network of nurse led Walk-in Centres and Community Health Centres to provide residents with a range of services including oral health, pathology collection, post-acute care and support, rapid access clinics and chronic disease management.

"In this context, we know parking will be a significant consideration for the community and this is being taken into account in the design phase of the project."

Minister for Planning and Sustainable Development Chris Steel said Infrastructure Canberra has also proposed the Inner South Health Centre be declared as a Territory Priority Project.

"I encourage the community and other stakeholders to have their say on the proposed declaration of the Inner South Health Centre as a Territory Priority Project as well as the draft amendment to the Territory Plan," said Minister Steel.

"If declared the project would exempt the project from third party appeals. I would like to hear the community's views on the proposal through comments to Territory Planning Authority, which I will consider before I make a decision on the declaration."

Public consultation on the proposed Territory Priority Project and Draft Major Plan Amendment closes 19 November 2025.
