Pike River Activists Rally at Mackay May Day

Mining and Energy Union

Pike River family members and activists Sonya Rockhouse and Anna Osborne will address Mackay's May Day rally on Monday, with a message of solidarity for Queensland workers facing cuts to safety protections.

The pair are in Mackay ahead of the Australian release of the Pike River movie, which tells the story of the devastating 2010 New Zealand mining tragedy which cost 29 lives.

Sonya Rockhouse's son Ben was killed in the tragedy while her other son Daniel survived it and now works in the Queensland mining industry. Anna Osborne's husband Milton was killed in the Pike River disaster. Both have been instrumental in leading the Stand with Pike campaign for justice for families, accountability over the fatalities and improved workplace safety.

Sonya and Anna will address the Mackay May Day rally, along with Mining and Energy Union Queensland President Mitch Hughes.

They will also attend and speak at a preview screening of the Pike River movie, hosted by the Mining and Energy Union, on Tuesday 5 May.
