Pilbara Housing Program Extended After Success

Robe River Kuruma Aboriginal Corporation manages the program, which can help up to 56 families at any one time with stable housing options.

Robe River Kuruma Aboriginal Corporation's successful Housing Pathways Support Program (HPSP) has received an additional $1.1 million from the North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund (NWAHF).

Launched in 2022, the HPSP helps Aboriginal families in the Pilbara achieve stable, sustainable, and affordable private housing options.

The HPSP provides in-home, culturally secure support focusing on elements of financial literacy, household management, school engagement, and employment stability. To date, it has facilitated home ownership for six Aboriginal families on the private market and delivered significant improvements in wellbeing, employment, and debt reduction for many others.

"With the new funding, the HPSP will expand support from 28 families up to 56 families at any one time," Michele Brissett, Program Manager, NWAHF, Department of Housing and Works said.

"The two-year extension will also allow more time for testing and refining approaches to culturally secure housing support."

The funding is expected to pave the way for continued investment in strategies that empower Aboriginal families to achieve stable, independent housing and delivering lasting change for communities.

The HPSP is one of nine initiatives funded by the State Government's NWAHF Program, which aims to create pathways for social and economic independence and wellbeing for Aboriginal people in the Pilbara and Kimberley. The funding is administered by the Department of Housing and Works.

The HPSP extension reflects the program's success and the need for ongoing investment in culturally secure housing solutions across Western Australia's north.
