A crisis accommodation service provider in the Pilbara town of Roebourne has recently completed refurbishment of a safe house for women and children with a $755,784 grant from the State Government.

The government-owned property is leased and operated by Mawarnkarra Health Service for the benefit of the local and surrounding community.

The safe house provides supported accommodation for women and accompanying children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to domestic violence or other crises.

As well as a full refurbishment, the funding supported the addition of a new bedroom for overnight staff accommodation at the four-bedroom property, which also includes communal bathrooms, kitchen, dining, living and laundry rooms.

Mawarnkarra provides holistic and culturally appropriate services to support the health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Roebourne and surrounding areas.

The grant is part of the Cook Government's record $5.8 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.

As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"This $755,000 grant to Mawarnkarra is continuing our support for their valued work of providing safe and supportive accommodation for Aboriginal women and children at risk of homelessness due to crisis situations.

"Since 2021, our government has executed over $240 million in capital grants, funding new homes and refurbishments across the State."

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch:

"I'm proud to be part of a government dedicated to improving the lives of Aboriginal women and children in the Pilbara and across WA.

"This refurbished facility provides a safe, secure, well-appointed and culturally appropriate place to stay for women and children in the region who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or escaping domestic violence."

As stated byPrevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Jessica Stojkovski:

"It is critical that victim-survivors of family and domestic violence have access to a safe place to stay when they need it most, no matter where they live.

"Mawarnkarra's facility not only provides refuge for vulnerable Aboriginal women and their children, but also offers culturally appropriate, holistic support to rebuild their lives after escaping family and domestic violence."

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"I am pleased that Mawarnkarra Health Service has been granted $755,000 to help provide safe and culturally appropriate accommodation for Aboriginal women and children facing crisis and homelessness in Roebourne.

"This upgrade including a staff bedroom and full refurbishment ensures women and children have a secure place to turn to during their most vulnerable moments.

"Mawarnkarra plays a vital role in our community, and this funding reflects our government's commitment to supporting grassroots services and delivering real outcomes for people in Roebourne."
