With National Water Week kicking off on Monday, those interested in learning more about how their water rates are spent are encouraged to book a spot on one of three upcoming tours.
MidCoast Council will be hosting two tours at Bootawa Water Treatment Plant throughout the week, combining a behind-the-scenes look at the region's largest water supply facility with a koala spotting information session in the surrounding grounds.
Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said it was the first time the combined tours had been offered to the public.
"These tours are going to be really informative and highlight to people the importance of Bootawa Dam to our local area, not just for supplying water to the community but protecting an iconic and endangered native species," said Mr Scott.
The tours will be held on Tuesday 21 and Thursday 23 October from 9:30am-12:45pm.
A tour of the Bulahdelah Water and Sewage Treatment Plants will also be held on Saturday 25 October from 10am-2pm.
The tour will highlight to residents what happens before they turn on their taps and after they flush their toilets, offering a great insight into the local water cycle.
"Out of all our sites, the facilities at Bulahdelah are some of our most visual and accessible," said Mr Scott.
"People will get a lot out of it."
The first public tour of the Nabiac Water Treatment Plant was held on Saturday 11 October, showcasing the MidCoast's newest water supply facility and one that becomes critically important to the area in times of drought.
Mr Scott said the feedback from the tour was what Council had come to expect when welcoming people to these facilities.
"The vast majority of people that come on these tours are genuinely surprised to learn how extensive the processes are that go into providing them with good quality drinking water," he said.
"If you haven't been on one of our tours yet, I'd strongly encourage you to get along to one."
The tours are free and lunch is provided.
