City of Darwin is reminding the community to plan ahead and park safely if attending the Royal Australian Air Force's Pitch Black event at Mindil Beach on Thursday 23 July 2026.
The Royal Australian Air Force has implemented temporary traffic management measures to safely manage the large number of people expected to attend the event.
Road closures will be in place from approximately 3.00 pm, with traffic delays expected before and after the event.
The Mindil Beach car park is expected to reach capacity early and will close once full. Parking is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said City of Darwin was asking the community to support the traffic management arrangements and plan ahead.
"Pitch Black is expected to attract thousands of people to Mindil Beach, so we encourage everyone to allow extra travel time and think about how they will get to and from the event," Mr Styles said
"Exercise Pitch Black is a fantastic opportunity for the community to experience the Royal Australian Air Force in action, and we encourage everyone attending to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and support the traffic management arrangements that have been put in place to keep everyone safe," Mr Styles said.
"These arrangements have been designed by Defence to help ensure people can arrive and leave the event safely while minimising impacts on surrounding roads and neighbourhoods.
"We ask everyone to do their part by parking legally, following the directions of traffic controllers and event staff, and being patient as people make their way to and from the event," he said.
Temporary traffic management will be in place on Gilruth Avenue, Gardens Road, Marina Liveris Drive, Casino Drive, Smith Street and Chin Quan Avenue.
Some turning movements and access points may be temporarily restricted while traffic is managed around the event.
To help reduce congestion, visitors are encouraged to walk or cycle where practical, use public transport where available, catch a taxi or rideshare, or carpool with family and friends.
City of Darwin Rangers will be patrolling the area throughout the event to help keep roads clear and maintain safe access.
