Planning Pays Off: Great Holidays Ahead

Fair Trading NSW

NSW residents ready to scratch their travel itch in 2023 are being reminded to minimise stress and maximise relaxation.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Natasha Mann said people excited to make up for time lost during the pandemic travel drought should look before they book.

"Holidaymakers spent the past three years in travel limbo and might be a bit rusty on how to arrange a secure trip," Ms Mann said.

"When you buy a flight or book a hotel room you have automatic rights under Australian Consumer Law, such as the expectation a good or service will be acceptable or as advertised.

"But if you take these protections for granted and do not look before you book, your much-needed break may include an unexpected fee, payment or restriction on getting a refund, which might ruin the trip.

"NSW Fair Trading received 2182 complaints last year about negative experiences when booking or traveling on flights or cruise ships and with hotels and resorts.

Ms Mann said the most common travel complaint in 2022 was issues with cancellations or cooling off periods on reservations.

"Shop around for the best deal, read the cancellation or amendment policy and terms and conditions of your booking before you click 'buy,' check a travel agent's credentials before you contact them and consider buying comprehensive travel insurance," Ms Mann said.

"NSW Fair Trading is committed to helping holidaymakers maximise their trip by offering advice and tips before booking and support if things don't go to plan but it is up to consumers to be careful before signing a contract or they might have to chase a refund or take legal action."
