STEMSEL is a group of culturally diverse young people with a love and passion for all things STEM. During school terms, the group meets at the GRID Youth Hub on Saturdays, where members have access to STEM equipment, technology and resources to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through practical, hands-on learning.
STEMSEL lead facilitator Miro Kostecki said the Smart Basketball Game project provided students with the opportunity to apply their STEM knowledge to a practical and collaborative project.
"It is rewarding to see the students work through challenges together and use STEM kits, sensors and coding to bring their concept to life. The result reflects the creativity, persistence and technical skills they developed throughout the project."
STEMSEL support and leadership representative John Ikidi, believes the project demonstrates the value of providing young people access to the best support, resources and opportunities to excel in STEM.
"The partnership with the City of Playford Youth Team, The GRID and Northern Sound System creates an environment where young people can test ideas, develop new skills and build confidence. We're incredibly proud of the participants and their achievements."
STEMSEL has been supported through the City of Playford's Community Support and Grant program, which provides funding and support to strengthen community wellbeing, inclusion and participation. The program invests in community-led initiatives and partnerships that create positive social outcomes.
City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty congratulated the young participants on their achievement.
"It is fantastic to see young people from Playford putting their skills and creativity to the test and recognised with such an impressive result," Mayor Docherty said.
"STEM skills are becoming increasingly important across so many industries, particularly as northern Adelaide continues to grow in areas such as technology, defence and advanced manufacturing.
"We are proud to support opportunities that give our young people the space and resources to explore these interests, learn new skills and perhaps even discover a future career."
The Royal Adelaide Show success is the latest milestone for the group and a great example of what young people can achieve when given opportunities to experiment, collaborate and turn their ideas into something tangible.
