Police appeal for witnesses following hammer attack in Morwell

Latrobe Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after two people were assaulted on Church St in Morwell this morning (6 March).

It is believed two men became involved in an altercation in a house on Church Street around 2am after drinking together for several hours.

One of the men, a 51-year-old Morwell man, sustained serious injuries after the other man struck him several times with a hammer.

The offender then left the house and made his way to a near-by home where he gained entry.

The occupant of the second address, an 83-year-old woman, was struck several times with the hammer, when she tried to fight off the offender after he entered her bedroom.

Both victims are currently in hospital in a stable condition.

The offender fled the scene on foot and the investigation remains ongoing.
