A man is in custody following an assault and pursuit in the state's west.
Around 9:30am today (Sunday 3 May 2026), officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District were on Pilliga Road, Nebea, when they saw an SUV which had allegedly been involved in a pursuit overnight.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed, a pursuit was initiated, it was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
The vehicle was located, stopped on Baradine Road, west of the intersection to Pilliga Road.
Police will allege the driver got out of the SUV armed with a machete. A Taser was deployed and the 28-year-old man arrested.
A 26-year-old woman was found in the SUV with life-threatening injuries. She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being flown to John Hunter Hospital.
Two children – aged four and 18 months – were also found in the vehicle and are now in the care of family.
The 28-year-old man is currently under police guard at a Coonamble Health Service facility.
