Police arrest man after border breach, South Australia

A man has been arrested following a breach of emergency directions after he entered the State illegally.

Police will allege that about 1.20pm on Thursday 12 August, a man attended the Hindley Street Police Station after he failed to pay a taxi fare.

The taxi driver and man (both wearing masks) spoke with police, who determined that the man had not completed the required Cross Border Travel application when he drove into SA from New South Wales via Victoria on 11 August. His car was located at Mount Barker and seized by police.

The Hindley Street station was closed so it could be thoroughly cleaned. Both men underwent COVID-19 testing and recorded negative results. There was no risk to members of the public or staff inside the premises, and the station was reopened after cleaning yesterday afternoon.

The driver was able to resume his duties, and the passenger, a 21-year-old New South Wales man, was taken to a medi-hotel while further checks could be conducted to determine his travels throughout SA and other states.

Today (Friday 13 August), police arrested the man and charged him with two counts of breaching the Emergency Management Act.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later time.
