Police arrest man over Port Adelaide break-in, South Australia

A man has been arrested following a break-in at a sports store at Port Adelaide last night.

Just after 11.30pm on Saturday 9 July, police were called to the shopping plaza on Commercial Road after reports two men were seen damaging property. The men then left in a two door Mazda Bravo tray top ute.

Patrols were quick to the scene and discovered that a glass window had been smashed to gain entry to a sports store. CCTV showed the two men grabbing a large amount of clothing before leaving in the vehicle.

About 2am (Sunday 10 July), police spotted the suspect vehicle on Port Road at Cheltenham but it failed to stop and was followed as it turned off into Glyde Street. The vehicle stopped on Ryan Avenue at Woodville West where the driver ran and the passenger grabbed a bicycle from the rear tray and rode off.

Patrols set up cordons around the area and with the assistance of PD Zeus, located the driver hiding in a front yard of a home on Ryan Avenue. The suspect on the bike was last seen riding towards Port Road but was not located.

Checks on the car revealed it had been stolen from Woodville North overnight on Thursday.

A small amount of property stolen from the break-in was found in the ute.

A 33-year-old man from Ceduna was charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, theft, illegal use of a motor vehicle, fail to stop, driving dangerously to engage in a pursuit, and breach of bail. He was further charged with going equipped and possessing a prohibited after tools and a sling shot were found.

He has been refused bail to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.
